Vashlovani Protected Areas
Vashlovani Protected Areas are located in Dedoplistskaro, near the border of Azerbaijan and Georgia which were formed on the basis of the Vashlovani Strict Nature Reserve established in 1935, on an area of 35067.56 ha in 2003 and occupy 14% of the Municipality territory.
This is a unique place where you will find different natural ecosystems on a small territory – desert, semi-desert, prairie, arid woodlands, deciduous forest and floodplain forest, cliff Xerophyte, foothill Paliurus forest, and loam plant zones.
Many species of flora and fauna of the protected areas are included in the “Red List” of Georgia. 41 Caucasian and 5 Georgian endemic species are noteworthy: Wild vine (Vitissilvestris G. Gmel), pistachio tree (Pistacia mutica), Georgian iris (Iris Iberica), Georgian almond, pomegranate (Punicagranatum), common barberry (Berberis vulgaris), regional bellflower (Campanula Kachetica), common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and many other insects, animals, birds, reptiles and fish.
