“The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”- is in the Kalevipoeg Museum
Kalevopoeg is an Estonian folk hero who liberated and strengthened Estonia. Most stories about this giant hero can be heard in Jogeva County in Estonia. Here you will find his sword in the river Kaepa, there are places where he rested, boulders that he could throw, large axes, ploughing furrows, and other tools.
The museum opened in the former school building and is one of the important tourist attractions of the region. The museum has 12 themed rooms that present Kalevipoeg legends and Estonian heritage. There are 17 wooden statues of epic heroes standing on the territory of the museum. There is also a very simply furnished cafe in the museum courtyard.
The museum collects printed and electronic products about this hero of the Estonian epic: films, CDs, books, studies, and others. One hall is dedicated to the exhibition of epics of the peoples of the world. During our group’s visit, we found that there was no Georgian medieval epic poem “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”.
We asked our Estonian friends in Dedoplistskaro from the Estonian Rural Tourism Organization to provide the English translation of the poem for this museum.
And now, our gift – the greatest literary work of Georgia –„The Knight in the Panther’s Skin“, written in the 12th century by Georgia’s national poet Shota Rustaveli – is already in the museum.
